City: Elkhart
State/Prov.: TX Occupation: Part time teacher Marital Status: Married No. of Children: 1 What have you been doing for 40 years?: Forty years - my, how time flies. As many of us did, I graduated from SFA with a BS in elementary education and a Masters in Education; working for 2 years in the Registrar's office at SFA while completing my master's degree. I married my husband Ron in 1972. We lived in Nacogdoches for our first five years of marriage during which I finished graduate school and taught three years at Nettie Marshall Elementary. After that, Ron was hired as a business professor at Trinity Valley Community College - Palestine Campus, so we relocated to Elkhart, TX. I taught 3rd and 5th grade in Elkhart ISD for 11 years. During that time, I also taught 5th grade choir and was the music director for Elkhart First Baptist Church. I moved on to teach in Palestine ISD where I have since completed my career of 37 years in education. In Palestine, I taught 3rd grade and finally 4th grade math, science, and social studies. I formally retired 6 years ago for heath reasons, but I continue to teach with Palestine ISD on a part time basis. Ron and I have a beautiful daughter, Michal, who is 22. Michal graduated from Baylor University in May, 2007, with a BBA in Media Business and Marketing. She is now attending Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN, completing a Master's of Fine Arts in Recording Arts and Technology (a three year program). After graduation, she will work in the music industry doing production. She is engaged to a wonderful young man, Mr. Justin Kimball, who will be transferring to MTSU this spring to finish his bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He would like to pursue an MBA after he graduates. They are to be married in December, 2007, after more than four years of dating. Ron is still a professor with TVCC in Palestine. He now has thirty years in his profession. We look forward to full retirement in the near future. We plan to travel, take life easy, and do whatever retired baby boomers do. We may even move to Tennessee, if Michal and Justin decide to make that part of the country their permanent home. |

City: Conroe
State/Prov.: TX Occupation: Chamber of Commerce President Website: www.communitychamber.com Marital Status: Married No. of Children: 2 What have you been doing for 40 years?: After graduation I entered SFA and graduated in December, 1971 with hopes of becoming a coach. That never happened as far as public education is concerned but I have spent many, many hours coaching my kids and their friends in youth sports. I met Sylvia Hall that first summer session and we married in August, 1969 and will celebrate our 38th anniversary next week. We were blessed with two wonderful kids, Angela and Alan. Angela and her husband Greg live in Angleton where she is a Special Education teacher and Greg is the City Manager. Our granddaughter Lauren is 13 and a blast to be around. Our son Alan and his wife Sarah live in Tomball where Alan teaches Special Education at the Alternative School and Sarah runs the nursery progam at their church and works from home for Leadership Montgomery County. Our grandson Brady will be 5 in early September. Sylvia is also a Special Education teacher and teaches in Conroe ISD. She is looking forward to retirement after just two more years. After graduation we moved to Pasadena where I worked in the oil and ag chemical industry for five years. We moved to Lufkin (yes to Lufkin) in 1977 and I enjoyed a twenty-five year career with Lufkin-Conroe Telephone. After the first seventeen years we moved to Conroe and took an "early out" package in 2002. Along the way we co-owned Just For Kids children's clothing shop in Lufkin for six years. After serving as a volunteer in both the Lufkin Chamber and the Conroe Chamber and learning a little about the chamber industry I decided to make it my second career and after the "early out" from the phone company I was hired as President of the Community Chamber of Commerce of East Montgomery County in August of 2003. I have now completed my fourth year as a Chamber professional. Throughout my career I have tried to give back to the communities where we lived and have served on numerous non-profit boards and other organizaitons. I have been honored to serve as Chairman of the Board of the Conroe Chamber, the Montgomery County United Way and currently serve as President of the Association of Texas Leadership Programs, the Gulf Coast Chamber Executives and the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County. I also chaired the United Way campaign in 2002 and have served on the facility study committees for Conroe ISD, New Caney ISD and Splendora ISD. Another important aspect of my career has been participation in community leadership programs. I have graduated from Leadership Lufkin, Leadership Montgomery County and Leadership North Houston and serve as director and coordinator of Leadership East Montgomrey County. Developing young and new leaders for our communities is critical to our future success. I look forward to retiring a second time in the future and hope to start a consulting firm specializing in leading strategic planning retreats and leadership program retreats. Three years ago Sylvia and I purchased fifteen acres in Fairfield, Texas and look forward to retiring there in the future. It is out in the country and nearly at the end of the road and serves as our "get away" from the big city. I have enjoyed checking out the "Then and Now" postings as well as the Blog and look forward to seeing you in October. |

Marital Status: Single
What have you been doing for 40 years?: After NHS (Go Dragons!) I planned on starting immediately at Angelina Junior College. Due to a bizarre chain of events, my transcript got lost and I had to sit out the fall semester. I don’t think that I ever got over it. I enrolled in Angelina Junior College (Go Roadrunners!) in January, 1968, on a partial academic scholarship. As you know, I never was much in the way of “book smart,†so I thought that Animal Husbandry might be a good major for me. The way the guidance counselor explained it, I had a complete misconception about that field. My first attempt a college was a disaster. (I don’t think that I ever recovered). Taking 6 hours that semester was really too heavy a workload, seeing that I had to commute 25 minutes every day, day in and day out. I didn’t do any part time work, because I was really trying to concentrate on my studies. After two semesters, the AJC guidance counselor suggested that I might consider the military, but there were some pending charges in San Augustine County that the recruiter said would “just not look right†on a military record. I was pretty crushed, and I can’t help but think that everything could have turned out differently if I had just had the chance. And the same dang thing happened when I tried to get into local law enforcement. It was just “pending charges,†and it never even went to trial! Again, quite a blow for a tender ego. So I drifted out to the San Francisco area and the late 60’s “hippie scene,†where I spent the next 10 years thinking. You know, Los Angeles is sunny all the time, but that bay area is cloudy, windy, cold, and damp… kinda put my soul in a low spot, if you know what I mean. Along the way, I got married seven or eight times. But, never having much luck with the ladies, things just always went south. I really can’t put my finger on what was wrong with any of them. So I moved back to Texas a few years ago, and was doing real good until my trailer burnt up in a fire. Could have been worse- I lost all my pictures from previous marriages. Regrets? I’ve had a few; but then again, too few to mention. I did what I had to do, and saw it through without exemption. I planned each careful step, charted each course, along the highway. But I never was very good at planning, either. Oh, what a mess I’ve made of my life! My doctor is having a little trouble fine-tuning my meds, but she says that I’ll be “steady again†come reunion time. I’m really looking forward to some slow dancin’ with a certain cheerleader and a drill team member or two! See you in October! Incidentally, I’m in the insurance business now, and I can’t wait to find out about what in life is really important to you! From Billy Don : I'M BACK!!! SORRY, I HAD TO GO AWAY FOR A WHILE! I HAVE SLIPPED BACK IN, MAYBE THEY WON'T FIND OUT AND TAKE ME OFF AGAIN. I HAVE MADE SOME T-SHIRTS FOR PRIZES -- TAKE A LOOK AT THEM IN THE "CLASS OF 1967" PHOTO ALBUM! SHHHHH--- DON'T TELL THEM I'M HERE! |
