From Bill:
Since some people are putting some historical background on the reunion website I’ll add my two bits.
Man, 40 years of fun….where did they go. It seems like only yesterday that Jimmy Daniels, Indio Calzeda, Connie Luna, Chris Odom and I were spending late hours sucking on the keg at the big pink house on the hill and being driven home by the ones that were sober enough to drive – dumping us on the back porch and leaving us at the mercy of parents who obviously had no sense of humor back then. Oh well, corporal punishment must work since I’ve never been convicted of anything other than poor judgment, a lack of civil manners and taking it to the limit (sounds like a song!).
In the post NHS years, I was forced into reality suddenly when my friendly draft notice appeared in 1968. Grades at SFA were a somewhat secondary priority at the time, so the outcome was to join the Navy for 4 years rather than be a grunt in ‘Nam. Making that decision wasn’t near as hard at telling the love of my life – Joy Deason – that I was leaving for the military. Of course, that time in all our lives was different and it was a time of growing up quickly – except for Mark Garrison who joined the Navy for 2 years and spent it in Hawaii (now what did he have to do to the recruiter to get that sweetheart deal????).
After Uncle Sam, I spent 5 years driving an 18 wheeler for Bright Coop and getting a physics/math/geology degree from SFA. The lure of adventure called and I have spent the past 30 years working in the oil industry. My career includes being an offshore petrophysical engineer, operations VP for a small independent oil company and region sales and operations manager for a large petrophysical evaluation/directional drilling company. For the past 15 years I’ve been in charge of U.S. sales for a company based in Austria that makes sophisticated directional drilling tools. I have lived in the swamps (literally) of south Louisiana, Lafayette (twice), New Orleans, Wharton (anyone know where that is?), Anchorage (damn it’s cold up there) and in Houston for the last 17 years. I travel to Europe about 4 times per year and to Canada about twice a year.
Personally, I spent about 15 years trying to wear myself out, was married for almost 20 years then divorced and now, for the past 5 years, have finally been blessed from above to be married to the only woman I ever loved – Joy Deason Bailey!! Dreams do come true in this life. We have two late teens that have started college and two labs – a yellow and a chocolate. My recreation activities are spending as much time as possible with Joy, staying at the Bailey Basshole on Toledo Bend, running down the lake at 70 mph in my bass boat, and playing with my ’67 Malibu. Life is wonderful and health seems to be good – especially since I was rode hard and put up wet for so long.
There’s only one question about life – when are we supposed to grow up? Uuuhhh, maybe there’s a couple more: how did Mark Garrison get to spend 2 years in Hawaii; and why does Mary wet her pants when she laughs (I know it’s not hereditary). I look forward to seeing everyone. From the pictures, most of us look better now!!!!!
